Tram 28 at a tram stop in Lisbon, Portugal |
This is the story of how Portugal won me over.
I had the opportunity to spend two unforgettable weeks in Lisbon on a personal trip. We stayed along Rua dos Sapateiros, a charming street located in the heart of the city. Surrounded by historic buildings, local shops, and vibrant culture, it was the perfect base for exploring the city.

We arrived shortly after midnight, knowing very little about Lisbon. Unlike other European destinations that often dominate travel guides and social media feeds, Portugal felt like an undiscovered gem. As we walked through the quiet streets on our first night, I was immediately drawn to the city's charm. The warm glow of streetlights, beautiful architecture, and peaceful atmosphere made me feel that I was about to experience something special.
One of the things I loved most about Lisbon was how easy it was to explore on foot. Our accommodation was just a street away from the famous Rua Augusta, one of the city's most vibrant avenues. Fun fact: the word "Rua" simply means "street" in Portuguese.
Every day became an adventure as we wandered through souvenir shops, cafés, restaurants, and historic streets. While searching for magnets, tote bags, and other keepsakes, I noticed two symbols that seemed to be everywhere, sardines and roosters. Sardines are a beloved part of Portuguese cuisine and culture, while the colorful Barcelos Rooster is a symbol of luck, honesty, and faith. These iconic images can be found on almost every souvenir in Lisbon. Additionally, I was also lucky enough to try an authentic Pastel de Nata, a famous Portuguese sweet delicacy. This delicious egg tart has become increasingly popular around the world in recent years.

| Pink Street |
Next stop, one of the most memorable places we visited was Pink Street, officially known as Rua Nova do Carvalho. Famous for its bright pink pavement, this lively street has become Lisbon's most popular nightlife district. Filled with bars, restaurants, and a vibrant atmosphere, it offers a different side of the city that perfectly blends modern energy with historic surroundings.
Beyond its beautiful streets and landmarks, no visit to Lisbon would be complete without riding one of its iconic trams. These vintage yellow trams have become a symbol of the city, and it is amazing how Portugal continues to preserve them as part of everyday life. We made sure to experience the famous Tram 28, which winds through some of Lisbon's most picturesque neighborhoods and historic districts. It felt like a sightseeing tour on rails. The tram is incredibly popular, and we waited nearly an hour before finally boarding, but the experience was absolutely worth it.

What began as a destination I knew very little about quickly became one of my favorite places in Europe. Lisbon's rich history, vibrant culture, charming streets, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere left a lasting impression on me. Sometimes, the destinations we least expect are the ones that capture our hearts the most.
And for me, Lisbon will always be one of those places.
