Everything you need to know about your airline boarding pass

Watch the video about airline boarding pass here https://youtu.be/8t-3OCtkxMA

Everyone who has experienced boarding an airplane should know what a boarding pass is. However, how well you know all the codes written in the boarding pass! There are some marks wherein passengers just ignore and just get the necessary details they need in filling out their departure and arrival forms.

What is a boarding pass, anyway?

Sample of Manual Printed Boarding Pass. This is the typical boarding pass, issued at the check-in counter at the airport.

For up-and-coming travelers, a boarding pass is some kind of document that is given to a passenger/s by the airlines upon checking in granting the passengers permission to board the airplane for a particular flight. This document contains all the necessary information about the flight, airports, schedule timing, etc. and by scanning the barcode, the airlines or airport personnel can easily access and check the passenger name record (PNR) in the system.

See below details and meaning of the codes through this infographic.

This is just a sample creative for traveler's reference. This infographics is very helpful so you may know the meaning of the codes written on your boarding pass (especially when filling up forms such as pre-departure, arrival card, and other important documents required during your flight/s). Have you heard or seen an SSSS mark in your boarding pass? What does it stand for?

The SSSS stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection. This code only applies to passengers traveling to the United States of America (USA). If this appears on your boarding pass, it means that you'll be subject for a thorough examination or additional screening by security. The policy was initiated by the Transport Security Administration after the 9/11 terror attack.

So, how does anyone end up in having tagged with SSSS? Although neither TSA nor airlines publish the criteria some of the reasons may be due to random selection, passengers have one-way ticket reservation, passengers who pay their ticket in cash, or you might bear the same name on the highly classified roster. Again, the SSSS marking only applies to passengers with the flight bound to the USA.

I hope this simple information had helped you. Just a reminder, DO NOT post your boarding pass online especially on social media. Remember, that small piece of paper holds valuable information about your flight. With just a single scan of your boarding pass's barcode, a malicious person can change or cancel your flight.

  3. Hi. Im a first timer traveler, i dont know how to find my seat number. Can you help me?

    1. Hi, thank you for reading my article. Sorry for the late reply.
Check the 2 sample boarding pass above (in this article). In the manual boarding pass image locate the 32C (seat number) and in the electronic boarding pass image locate the 15K (seat). Then compare it with your boarding pass. Airline seat assignments are always represented by alpha-numeric code. I hope this will still help you. Thank you :)
