18 Highlights You Should Not Miss When Visiting JAPAN

A timeless destination with a fusion of it’s vibrant modernity and ancient culture — Japan, without a doubt, is included in everyone’s travel bucket list. From the bustling city of Tokyo to the scenic Hokkaido and all the way to Osaka’s diverse culture, Japan will surely live up to your travel expectations.

 

The first time I set foot in this country, I instantly felt enamored by its exquisites. Japan is indeed a wonderland and I must say, it is truly one of the places I can never get tired of! Every visit to this country gets more interesting as it is undeniably packed with fascinating places and activities to discover. 

 

With that being said, let this travel guide show you what the 'Land of the Rising Sun' has to offer!

 

It can be an overwhelming task to plan an itinerary in such a vast country. Thus, I will share with you my hand-picked list of the must-do things and must-visit places in Osaka, Fuji, Tokyo area, and its neighboring cities.

 

OSAKA, KYOTO AND NARA

 

1. OSAKA CASTLE

First on the list is Osaka’s renowned Osaka’s Castle. Visit one of Japan’s most fascinating structures — built over a hundred years ago, this castle is a sheer realm of its rich history. While the castle itself is endearing, its park is also worth exploring! It attracts tourists for its changing foliage, especially during the sakura season.



2. MAKE YOUR OWN SUSHI IN KYOTO UMEMORI SUSHI SCHOOL

What’s the better place to have sushi other than Japan? This restaurant that is located in Kyoto offers a whole new experience to enjoy sushi. Have a go and make sushi by yourself!

 


3. FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE

Famous for its seemingly endless torii gates, Fushimi Inari Shrine would surely captivate you! Make sure to strike a pose wearing a Kimono on its brightly colored torii gates and shrines!



4. NARA DEER PARK & TODAIJI TEMPLE

Never miss a chance to visit Kyoto’s neighboring city, Nara. With Shinto Buddhism, they consider deers to be the messenger of gods, thus making it another recognizable symbol of Japan. Witness and have the chance to feed the deers freely roaming around the park.



5. SHINSAIBASHI AND DOTONBORI

Shop and eat through Osaka’s most famous shopping areas! Have the opportunity to pose like a Glico man at the famous Ebosubshi Bridge.



6. UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN

Love amusement parks? Osaka’s Universal Studios might be perfect for you! Have fun and dine inside this Hollywood inspired theme park. Just outside of the enormous park is the Universal Citywalk, lined with multiple hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops.



7. RIDE A SHINKANSEN

Aside from temples, food and parks, Japan is also known for its speedy and efficient rail network. What’s the best way to move city after city other than riding Japan’s relaxing bullet train?

8. OVERNIGHT IN A RYOKAN

Experience the traditional Japanese lifestyle and hospitality by spending a night in a Ryokan! Walk around wearing your yukata, experience sleeping in tatami-matted rooms and futon-style beds and never miss the chance to try Onsen bath!



9. MT FUJI

Considered as one of Japan’s “Three Holy Mountains” Mt. Fuji is sure one of the most endearing sights to visit in this country. Snap a few photos of the snow-capped mountain to complete your Japan trip!



TOKYO AND OTHER CITIES

 

10. ASAKUSA KANNON TEMPLE AND NAKAMISE SHOPPING STREET

Bask in the vibe of old Japan in the middle of the city by visiting Tokyo’s oldest temple! Also known as Sensoji, this temple attracts thousands of visitors every day who come to worship and participate in traditional rituals. Complete your visit by buying local goods and souvenirs at the traditional shopping street known as Nakamise-dori. This kilometer long-street runs from the iconic Kaminarimon gate right up to Tokyo's prestigious  temple.



11. TOKYO SKYTREE & TOKYO TOWER

Get a chance to witness Tokyo city in a bird’s eye view in the observation decks of the two most famous landmarks of the city — Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree!



12. SHOP AT HARAJUKU AND SHINJUKU

A place where technology and manga are combined, visiting Akihabara’s neon lights and bustling district will make your trip even more memorable! You wouldn't want to miss experiencing crane games and maid cafès too!

Ramen is right to be one of Japan’s holy grail foods alongside sushi. Why not indulge your taste buds with the wide variety of this flavorful dish in its originating country?
