A visit to Switzerland is not complete
without traveling to the ice-capped mountains of the Alps. These are the
highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe
across the following countries: France, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy,
Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. One of the most visited
mountains in Switzerland that can be included in a day trip is Mt. Titlis,
which is mainly accessed from Engelberg.
Switzerland is one of my favorite
countries in the Priceless Europe package due to the breathtaking views of the
Swiss Alps at Mt. Titlis. Another reason is “snow”. I always dreamt of seeing snow as a kid
and this place made my dream come true! Mt. Titlis is best enjoyed at any time
of the year due to its eternal snow and glaciers and one can experience snow
even in the summer season! Sounds fun right? Just do not forget your winter
clothes to protect yourself since the temperature in Mt. Titlis is
unpredictable and varies from 10° to -16°c.
The area is also a bit slippery so it is advisable to wear footwear that
has a good grip to avoid slipping in the snow.
From Lucerne, we rode our private coach
going to Engelberg (approx. 30-45 minutes) and when we arrived in the area,
tickets were distributed (entrance fees are included in the package) and we
rode the TITLIS Xpress cable car up from Engelberg to Stand station.
The TITLIS ROTAIR cable car, the world's
first revolving cable car will then take you on the final leg of the ascent
from Stand to the summit station at 3,020 meters above sea level. The cable car
revolves 360 degrees during the five-minute trip and will give you panoramic
views of the Alps. The journey from Engelberg to TITLIS mountain station takes
around 30 minutes.
This trip was during the winter season
and the -10°c cold breeze welcomed us on the 5th level. It was a sunny day, but
the air is very cold that you can see tiny clouds when you breathe.
The excursion to Mt. Titlis is half-day,
either in the morning or afternoon if you will join the Priceless Europe group
tour. This half day tour is not guided so you will be able to enjoy your own
free time at the mountain. The local tour escort will just meet the group after
the free time. I am sharing below activities that I have experienced during the trip:
Glacier
Cave
From the Titlis mountain station, you
may enter the Glacier Cave. This cave has ice formations up to 5,000 years old
and is in a dim turquoise-blue light with a constant temperature of -1.5˚C.
Exploring the cave is a magical and fun experience. The area is slippery so be
careful in walking and taking of photos. The cave also has handrails that can
help prevent slipping.
Entrance: Free
TITLIS
Cliff Walk
Prepare yourself for a heart-pounding
moment if you would like to try walking into the TITLIS Cliff Walk. It is one
metre wide and over 100 metres long. This area is usually open and it is closed
during bad weather. I had the chance to
walk in the TITLIS Cliff Walk last 2018 for summer (May) and wintertime (December). The cold breeze and swaying
of the bridge added to the thrilling and one-of-a-kind experience.
Entrance: Free
Ice
Flyer
See the amazing views of the glacier by
taking the Ice Flyer. The Ice Flyer chair lift will fly you to the TITLIS
glacier park in the Summer, and in the Winter, the chair lift will take you to
the ski slopes of the summit.
Entrance: Optional activity with charge (approximately CHF 12.00 = USD 12.00 per person)
Restaurants
and Shops
TITLIS offers various restaurants and shops to choose from. One of the restaurants that you can try is the Titlis Panorama Restaurant, which serves up panoramic views of the glacier at 3,020 metres above sea level. Main courses include regional specialties, pastas, pizzas, and lots of desserts to choose from.
You can also try the Mövenpick Ice Cream Bar which offers various melt-in-the-mouth treats, or hot drinks, and Asian noodle soups for a quick meal.
If you would like to see the breath-taking
views of the Swiss Alps while enjoying your half-day free time, then our
Priceless Europe tour package
offers an
opportunity to experience the eternal snow of Mt. Titlis and create memorable
moments with your family or friends.
