What It’s Really Like to Visit Mongolia in Winter

YOUR EVERY JOURNEY IS A BLESSING.

If you're looking for quiet landscapes, nomadic culture, and a trip that brings warmth in the most unexpected ways, Rakso Travel’s Mongolia Winter Thrill: A Land of Eternal Blue Sky delivered an unforgettable experience.

Why Mongolia?

Mongolia might not be the first destination that comes to mind for a holiday escape, and that’s exactly what made it perfect. Travelers seeking something different, unique, and far from the usual tourist attractions found just that. Rakso Travel’s winter itinerary delivered an authentic dog sledding experience where we were pulled by hardy Siberian huskies or Mongolian wolfhounds, a luxurious stay in gers, cultural encounters, and adventure in every snowy corner.

The Adventure Begins: Ulaanbaatar and Tov Province

From the package title itself, it’s clear that this is a winter thrill! Right after landing in  Ulaanbaatar, guests were welcomed with a royal-style lunch at Chinggisiin Khuree Camp surrounded by snow-covered traditional gers, followed by shopping at the iconic Mongolian State Department Store. The next day brought snowy thrills at Sky Resort with hours of sledding and skiing, and cultural exploration at Sukhbaatar Square and the National Museum.

The adventure continued with visits to the breathtaking Terelj National Park and the towering Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex. At the top of the horse’s head is an observation deck, where tourists enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding steppe landscape, beautifully covered in snow.

Experience authentic dog sledding & horseback riding

The highlight of this tour day was dogsledding and horseback riding across frozen rivers. A rare opportunity to ride traditional wooden sleds pulled by a team of huskies or Mongolian wolfhounds, known as bankhar dogs, and end the day in a cozy luxury ger stay, which will give a true taste of nomadic life.

The itinerary also included a stop at the iconic Turtle Rock, a prominent granitic rock formation that resembles a turtle for photos, and enjoy traditional Mongolian performances such as throat singing, dance, and more, before heading to the panoramic Zaisan Monument for sweeping views of the city..

A spiritual note was added with a visit to the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, where travelers witnessed morning prayer ceremonies and gained insight into Buddhist practices in a serene and contemplative setting.

Meals throughout the trip were a comforting blend of hearty Mongolian dishes and familiar Korean favorites. Travelers enjoyed shopping for cashmere and souvenirs at local markets and malls, treasures to remember this extraordinary adventure.

And yes, it is cold. Temperatures can drop as low as -30°C, but with the right clothing like thermal layers, insulated boots, and a good jacket, it’s absolutely bearable. In fact, the crisp air and snowy serenity will add to the adventure. As one traveler joked, it felt like being a hot dog in a freezer, yet entirely worth it.

Closing out the year in Mongolia felt like entering a living postcard, where every moment shimmered with snow and tradition.
