Taiwan extends visa-free entry for Philippine citizen

Great news Filipino travelers!

Finally, Taiwan has extended its trial period of visa-free privileges to Filipinos until July 31, 2019, for a maximum stay of 14-days. An official announcement was made by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines yesterday, July 12, 2018.

This is still a continuation of the trial period which started last November 1, 2017. As stated in the TECO announcement, the visa-free privilege is a reflection of Taiwan's goodwill and friendship towards all Filipinos under the "New Southbound Policy" which aims to build stronger bilateral relations and closer people-to-people connectivity between Taiwan and the Philippines.

Statistics report from Taiwan's Tourism Bureau shows that the number of Filipino visitors to Taiwan increased from 172,475 in 2016 to 290,784 in 2017.  On the other hand, arrivals of Taiwanese nationals in the Philippines also increased its number and reached 236,777.

In line with their visa-free guidelines, Filipinos must have the following requirements:

1.) Ordinary or regular passport at least 6-months valid on the date of entry. Diplomatic and official passport holders are not eligible for visa-free;
2.) The traveler must secure a roundtrip ticket to and from their place of origin or a ticket to the next destination and the corresponding visa required.
3.) No criminal record in Taiwan; and
4.) Proof of accommodation (it can be a hotel booking or sponsor's contact information or arrangements of tour, travel, visit, events, and meeting etc.

The visa-free extension was extended to 2 more Southeast Asian nations; Thailand, and Brunei. In conjunction, Taiwan's "New Southbound Policy” aims to increase visitors and build economic communities between Taiwan and 18 countries from Southeast Asia (including the Philippines), South Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
